10 Technology Trends that Businesses Must Not Ignore

Management consultancy McKinsey has identified 10 technology trends that will force executives to anticipate and respond to their effects on their enterprises.Pink Connect Helps Business

McKinsey said it identified emerging internet technologies, increased computing power, and fast, pervasive digital communications as key forces changing the management landscape back in 2007.

“Since then, the technology landscape has continued to evolve rapidly,” it said. It noted that Facebook has quintupled in size in two years to touch more than 500 million users. More than four billion people now use cell phones, and 450 million access the web from a mobile. Read the rest of this entry »

Space, The Final Frontier

Internals of a Hard DriveAll around us, things are getting bigger, (or smaller in the case of the iPod) and things are getting faster, (or slower in the case of computer software that you really really need to load right now!!!)  This also applies to hard drives.  Many moons ago now, Western Digital released its first Raptor drive, which at the time rivalled any other conventional consumer hard drive for speed.  Its one limiting factor was the rather low 37GB capacity, but Western Digital soon did their best to rectify this, when they released the new 74GB version in 2004.  Two years later, the 150GB version appeared, making this drive unequalled in its usefulness in a home environment where both speed and size mattered, and also indispensable for small businesses needing a cheaper server solution.

But what about those who need more than 150GB storage?  While Western Digital’s creative department were away making fast drives, everyone else (including their normal department) made big drives, for those people who have lots of… stuff?  250GB soon became 500GB, then Hitachi released their Deskstar 7K1000, capable of storing 1TB of data.  Now we have 2TB drives, capable of storing much more data than any sensible person would ever need.  Most recently, Samsung are releasing a new 2TB “eco” drive, which can provide up to “23-percent lower power consumption”, whilst still maintaining its performance.

So what does this mean for the average user?  Simply put you will be able to future proof any of your systems against the likelihood of running out of space for some years, while staying “green” and for what will most likely be about £100.  Good deal?  Yes!

Happiness is just a laptop away!

Another happy customer, was made even happier with his latest purchase from Pink Connect. Craig Webb of the Pine Wood Hotel who already has a myriad of services through us, upon deciding he needed a new laptop as his current one was (and I quote) “down on its knees begging to be put out its misery.” and so he naturally came straight to us asking for a laptop quote.

It didn’t take long, we researched a laptop to his specifications and budget and promptly provided him with the quote and a picture of the laptop so he knew what he was getting. He being satisfied confirmed the order and it was sourced immediately in and fully setup for him and then sent on a next day delivery so that on arrival all he had to do was plug and play!

Upon receiving the laptop he sent a thank you email on his brand new Office 2010 suite and is now able to do his day to day business on a fast and reliable laptop!

Schools and colleges get set to buy direct: are you ready?

UK schools and colleges are to have more control over where they buy technology.

It’s the result of the Government’s plan to close down Becta. This central procurement team has worked on behalf of local authority education departments since 1998. It’s been their task to select and roster IT equipment and software suppliers and negotiate framework agreements with them.

But from November 2010 onwards educators are likely to be free to make their own purchase decisions. This potentially opens wide a new door – and fresh sales opportunities – for those who can offer a comprehensive portfolio of IT and communications solutions.
